Warm Seal

Big feelings and a love of people. Expressive enough that both delight and hurt show plainly. They care about friends and want to be with them, and are correspondingly easy to wound in relationships. The heart moves before the plan does, and they are most at ease among familiar people.

Where this child shines

  • Affection is expressed generously; being with them is warm.
  • They pick up a friend's mood quickly and offer comfort.
  • They do not hide feeling, so where they are is easy to read.
  • Inside a familiar group they lift the atmosphere.

What to keep an eye on

  • A small remark from a friend shakes them considerably.
  • Hurt shows immediately in face and manner.
  • Without planning, supplies and times get missed often.
  • They cling to relationships and struggle with time alone.

How to help

  • Name the feeling. "That was disappointing" comes before any explanation.
  • Listen to the whole account of a friendship without judging it.
  • Build up time alone gradually, in small doses.
  • Raise practical tasks after the feeling has settled.
  • Express affection clearly within the family. That becomes their strength outside it.

What lands well

"I see. That must have really stung."

What to avoid saying

"Why make such a fuss about that?" Feeling denied gets expressed more loudly, not less.

Activities that fit

  • Cooperative play with close friends
  • Role play and activities that express feeling
  • Cooking and outings with the family
  • Caring for a pet

How this shows up at different ages

Ages 3-4
At three and four both separation anxiety and attachment run strong. Time spent holding them is the stability at this stage.
Ages 5-7
Between five and seven the idea of a best friend arrives. "They didn't call for me" decides the whole day at this age.
Ages 8-10
From eight to ten peer relationships become the entire world. Conflict there reaches into learning and sleep.

Does this scene sound familiar?

Their best friend gets paired with someone else and they are tearful the whole way home. "You can play again tomorrow" gets "no, they don't like me now." Logic does not undo it. Acknowledge the feeling first and the next morning they set off for school as though nothing happened.

Friends and school life

Plenty of friends and genuine popularity, with steep peaks and troughs in those relationships. A falling-out with a best friend can unsettle the entire school day. Feeling shows on the face plainly enough that a teacher notices quickly. This is a type for whom relationship problems must be resolved before learning ones, and it is worth sharing that at a parents' meeting.

What parents most often get wrong

People call them dramatic or emotional. But this child feels largely; they do not exaggerate. And demanding a lot of affection gets read as dependence, when on a day their tank is full they manage remarkably independently.

How this differs from a similar type

Four traits match the Joyful Dolphin, and only curiosity differs. The dolphin releases feeling through new people and new play; the seal releases it by leaning on someone familiar. Both feel largely, but the dolphin widens outward and the seal deepens inward. "Make some other friends" is not a comfort to the seal.
